Classmates Put a Smile on a Friend's Face

from Mme Prokopowich & Grade 4/5 classmates-
Recently, one of my grade 5 students, Beaudin R. and his family lost their home to a fire. I was aware that the fire started during the school day and I was not sure how Beaudin's spirits would be when he returned to school the following day. He came and spoke to me first thing in the morning to share what had happened to his family and he asked if he could address the class to answer any questions his friends might have for him. Beaudin spoke with such maturity and clarity about the situation; focusing on the positives, how family and people are more important than any possessions. It was evident that he had been part of important family conversations that tell about people versus material things and how moving forward requires a positive outlook. The first day back after the fire presented some emotional moments, but as each day passes, he shows more and more strength. I have been aware for some time that Beaudin is passionate about art. This is the second year that I have had the pleasure of teaching Beaudin. He has presented me with many of his art projects (a subject that is also my passion). When thinking about how our class could reach out to Beaudin, I thought what better way than to replenish some of the art supplies he had been collecting at home. The families in our class have been more than generous and we were able to purchase quite a collection of art supplies that include sketching pencils, watercolor pencils, acrylic paints, brushes, an easel and some scrapbooking supplies. Beaudin's story has taught our class a lot about values and about philanthropy. It was such a special moment to witness the genuine smile and appreciation on his face when he opened his gifts from his classmates. We wish Beaudin and his family well as they rebuild their home together.

The École Macneill Parent Partnership Council held their Ye Olde Market Square on Saturday November 3.  The proceeds of the Silver Collection was donated to the Robertson family.

A call out to Macneill families for assistance resulted in donations of clothing, toys, gift cards and cash to help out during the first few days after the accident.  A few other class projects are in the works.

Thank you to everyone for your generosity and good will.
